Inextricably linked with Scottish culture, probably more so than Nessie or whisky. When British royalty fell for it in the mid 19th Century, it rapidly became high culture. As far back as the 1720s, some tartans were permitted only by specific military regiments. This added exculsivity and made for a fashion cult rather than a mere craze. And it continues to this day, with designer brands such as Ralph Lauren and Burberry still sporting tartans that are as popular as ever. Our love affair with tartan simply knows no bounds. Hokusai was a print-maker who lived in the early 19th Century and had no less than thirty different names during his lifetime. The famous Great Wave off Kanagawa is the first print from a series of thirty-six which he created in his sixties, when widely regarded to be producing his best work (so it’s never too late!). The central theme of the prints is Mount Fuji which can be seen in the background. As a Japanese Buddhist, the mountain represented the gifts of life and immortality, and Hokusai had something of a lifelong obsession with it.

An amalgamation of the red cross of Saint George, the white saltire of Saint Andrew and the red saltire of Saint Patrick, the modern British Union Jack Flag is here portrayed in its traditional form, fluttering in the wind.
